Entry Into Student Teaching
Minimum Requirements for Entry into Student Teaching
Overview
All teacher candidates as the University of Delaware must meet the minimum requirements for entry to student teaching.
**Please note, individual programs may maintain specific requirements for their candidates, for example, require certain tests, require additional tests, or require a higher passing score. If you have questions about your program’s requirements, please contact your department.
Options for Entry into Student Teaching
Candidates must meet the UCTE policy for entry into student teaching by meeting at least one of the following criteria:
- Earn a GPA of at least 3.0 based on the most recent two years of the candidate’s general education.
- Achieve an approved “College Ready” score in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, per the chart below.
- Be selected for entry by the candidate’s program under the 10% Waiver Policy per the policies on the Program-Specific Student Teaching Requirements webpage.
Individual programs may have additional requirements. Teacher candidates should check with their program coordinator.
Candidates seeking the GPA option should consult with their programs to determine their most recent 2-year GPA. A candidate whose GPA may be very close to the cutoff point may want to consider entering through the testing option. You are strongly encouraged to seek advising from your program to determine if the GPA option is the most appropriate pathway for you to gain entry into student teaching.
Teacher Candidates who choose the test option must achieve “College Ready” passing scores on a tests the measure the following three areas: reading, writing, and math. Candidates can mix-and-match scores from different tests, where appropriate.
Some tests combine reading and writing and a passing score on that test area can be applied to meet both the reading and writing requirement (see below):

UCTE Policy – Praxis Revision
Effective September 12, 2017, UCTE no longer requires candidates in a teacher education program to pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests upon completion of 60 credit hours and/or prior to admission to upper-level education courses.
Teacher preparation candidates must now meet at least one of the following requirements to enroll in student teaching:
- Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the most recent two years of the applicant’s general education, whether secondary or post-secondary
- Achieving a score deemed to be College Ready on a test of general knowledge normed to the college-bound population (for example, SAT, ACT, GRE, or Praxis Core)
**Please note: Programs may have requirements beyond the University’s minimum standards for entry into student teaching. Please contact your department if you have questions about your program’s requirements.
